ANDEO (www.andeo.org) is a Portland-based non-profit organization that has been specializing in educational homestay programs since 1981. Every year, they welcome high school and college-age students from France, Spain, Germany, Japan, China, and the Middle East to the City of Roses, and they are always looking for great host families. Hosting an international student is an opportunity to expose your children to another culture within the comfort zone of their own home, as well as giving them a real-world example of the benefits of language learning. The students usually stay for 2 to 4 weeks. Some of them have classes and activities in downtown Portland, others are free to simply follow the everyday flow of life with your family. Host families receive a small stipend to help cover extra food and utilities. Students and families are matched based on shared interests as well as your age and gender preferences. The final choice to host a particular student is always yours. For more information, or to apply to host, visit www.andeo.org or contact Paulene Hedgpeth at paulene@andeo.org.
